SO YOU WANT TO TAKE A CLINIC?

Maybe you have a dog that you would like to get started, tuned up, or just got a puppy that you want to get started off on the right paw! A clinic can be an amazing setting to do just that. There are a few things that you can do to prepare you and your dog to get the most out of a clinic!

  1. Having some structure/boundaries at home.

    • If your dog is allowed free reign at home and then you take him to a clinic where there is structure, it will be a bit of a shock to his system.

  2. A basic understanding of his name.

  3. Starting to understand commands such as a lie down, stand, or that’ll do.

  4. Auditing the clinician you would like to attend, you may or may not like their approach.

  5. Set some goals.

    • Even though your goals may change drastically from the beginning to the end of the clinic, it will help your clinician guide you towards those goals.

  6. Don’t be afraid to have hard conversations about your goals. The dog you currently own may not have what it takes to get you where you want to be, but he sure has the potential to teach you something along the way.

  7. Understand what you truly need from your dog in your operation, whether it’s on a cattle operation, shepherding, trialing, or just hobby herding.

  8. Most importantly, come open minded.

  9. Ask lots of questions! If something doesn’t make sense ask for clarification. A clinician should have a reason for what they are doing and why.
