TOOLS AND HOW DO WE USE THEM?

There are a few simples tools that I use in my sessions. The individual dog, their experience, and previously developed habits will determine the type of tools I will use for their specific sessions. I will let the dog show me what he needs. My most valuable tools are a 15 or 30 foot pull cord line with a small snap and a plastic cane or flag. The leash work sessions are essential in forming a working relationship with the dog and to teach commands such as a stand, lie-down, and recall.

The 15 or 30 foot leashes are used in my leash work sessions to help support what I am asking the dog. The small snap allows for a quick release when the dog gives me the desired result. The 30 foot line is often used for dogs with pre-existing habits that need to be rehabilitated. It gives the dog more space allowing them to make a mistake while I still have the ability to regain control.

The plastic stock cane is used as an extension of my arm, it is used to back up a correction, and to protect myself from stock if needed.

The flag is great for young dogs to help create movement and apply light amounts of pressure. Not to be used or slapped excessively, it can create reactivity in a dog.

It is important to remember that even the most gentle of tools can be harsh in the wrong hands. In the pursuit of perfection, we can miss the effort. It is important to recognize even the smallest of tries to make bigger long term gains.

“Happiness is not found in the pursuit of perfection but in the acceptance of imperfection. It blooms when we cherish the present, learn from the past, and embrace the journey toward a brighter future.” SELF HEALING
